What dichroic glass is
Dichroic glass carries an ultra-thin metallic oxide coating applied in a vacuum chamber — the same process used for optical filters and aerospace components. The coating reflects one part of the spectrum and transmits another, so the piece reads as a completely different colour depending on whether light falls on it or passes through it.
It is among the most expensive material an artist can work with, and it is unforgiving: overheating destroys the coating, so the artist has a narrower thermal window than with standard colour.
