Glass vs. Silicone Accessories — Which Should You Buy?

The most common question we get from new customers: glass or silicone? Short answer — it depends on how clumsy you are.

Glass: The Premium Choice

Pros:

  • Cleaner flavor. Borosilicate glass is inert — it doesn't taste like anything, doesn't react with what's burned through it.
  • Easier to clean. Soak in isopropyl alcohol with salt, rinse, done. Comes out looking new.
  • Looks better. Period. Glass is art-grade. Heady glass pieces are collectible.
  • Heat-resistant. Borosilicate handles thermal shock from torch hits.

Cons:

  • Breaks. Drop a glass piece on tile, you have a problem.
  • Heavier. Not ideal for true travel.
  • More expensive for premium pieces.

Silicone: The Practical Choice

Pros:

  • Drop-proof. Bounces. Bring it camping, to the beach, in the car — won't shatter.
  • Dishwasher safe. Some silicone pieces can go in the dishwasher.
  • Lighter and cheaper than equivalent glass.
  • Collapsible. Many silicone bongs collapse for storage.

Cons:

  • Can affect flavor over time, especially cheaper silicone. Look for food-grade platinum-cured silicone.
  • Stains and absorbs odor with heavy use.
  • Less satisfying aesthetically. Doesn't have the same craft feel.
  • Not ideal for high-heat dabs — most silicone has a max temp around 450°F.

The Hybrid Move: Glass + Silicone

Many premium pieces combine both — borosilicate glass body with a silicone protective sleeve, or silicone base with glass downstem. Best of both worlds. Browse hybrid pieces.

What about metal pipes?

Metal hand pipes (like some Vessel pieces) are durable and pocketable but can affect flavor and get hot. Good for travel, less ideal as a daily driver. View hand pipes.

Quick decision tree

  • Daily home use, want best flavor: Glass
  • Travel, beach, festivals, parties: Silicone or hybrid
  • Have kids/pets/clumsy roommates: Silicone
  • Building a collection or display piece: Glass (heady glass especially)
  • Dabbing high temperatures: Glass only

How to make glass last longer

  • Always set down on a padded surface or coaster
  • Clean weekly — residue weakens glass over time
  • Don't run cold water through hot glass (or vice versa) — thermal shock cracks
  • Get a sturdy travel case if you take it places
