What fuming is
Fuming introduces vaporised silver or gold into the glass during working. It produces colour without pigment — and, distinctively, colour that changes with use: fumed glass darkens and shifts tone as resin builds behind it, so the piece develops a patina over years rather than staying static.
Silver fume tends toward blues and greens, gold toward pinks and purples. It is one of the oldest techniques in the American studio tradition.
