Why red is difficult

Reds and oranges in borosilicate come from metal-based pigments that strike their final color under heat rather than showing it in the rod. The artist is working partly blind: push the piece too far and the color darkens or muddies, and there is no undoing it once the piece has annealed.

A tube carrying an even red across its full height is a controlled result, not a lucky one.
