Crushed opal

Opal is set into borosilicate as fragments, encased under clear glass while the piece is hot. Because opal and borosilicate expand at different rates, the encasing has to be done at a controlled pace or the piece cracks during annealing — the stone is genuinely difficult to work with, and the failure rate is why opal work carries a premium.

Set correctly, the fragments flash color independently of the surrounding glass, so the piece reads differently from every angle.
